Make Your Own Toothpaste Using 3 Key Ingredients!
Many people don’t know the what ingredients are found in their toothpaste, except fluoride which has been controversially advertised over the years.
Other ingredients found in commercial toothpaste include sodium hydroxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial sweeteners/dyes, titanium dioxide, and triclosan, among others. The number of chemicals found in these products may make you think twice about what you use to maintain oral hygiene.
If putting these chemicals in your mouth is a concern, you can make your own natural toothpaste, omitting anything you find questionable. Dr. Risos, Chula Vista dentist, offers you a relatively simple recipe to craft your very own toothpaste from scratch at home!
How to Make Your Own Toothpaste!
The Recipe
- ½ cup of coconut oil
- 2-3 tablespoons baking soda
- 15-20 drops of cinnamon essential oil or peppermint
- 2 small packets of stevia powder
- 10 drops of myrrh extract
Procedure
- Melt the coconut oil so it’s slightly soft
- Mix in the other ingredients as you stir, preferably with a fork if the coconut oil is semi-hard; otherwise, use a spoon. If the coconut oil is completely melted, stir multiple times as the mixture cools to maintain the baking soda
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar and allow it to cool completely
- To use, scoop small amounts using a small spoon and put on the toothbrush
- Stevia is used to mask the subtle taste of baking soda and provide a sweeter paste.
